Ite wetlands, Tacna

Ite has some of the qualities of Mejia. I had my first trip to this wetland back in 1997. Also back in 1997 and 1998, during my first trips, I observed a lot of Ducks and Shorebirds in the area. But during this short visit (27.06.13) I was surprised to find really high numbers of Coots, Ducks, Flamencos and Grebes in the area. Then next entrance I will dedicate to Ite wetlands. This first entry contains birds seen in the Southern part of the Lagoons.

This area lies quite close to Santa Cruz. However, it takes some time to get there. Sometimes you need a four-wheel drive the last 3 or 4 kilometers, but off course you will see more birds walking through the forest the last kilometers before coming to the dunes and lagoons.

The Roadside Hawk is still around

Today I saw the Roadside Hawk from my window once again, It had a prey as well (Picui Ground-Dove). There are a lot of birds in the garden here at SETELA, and it seems like the Hawk has discovered this food source.

This Roadside Hawk perched outside my office today. I decided not to open the window, and the quality of the photo is good enough (Alto Tujsupaya, Sucre, 14.08.09).

Sacsayhuamán, Cuzco 23.05

Sacsayhuaman isn't a place were you can see a lot of birds, but walking around this archaeological site there is always something to see.

Andean Lapwing, probably not present all year in the area.

Black-throated Flowerpiercer, this is a common bird in the area.

Stronewalls

White-throated Hawk soaring above the ruins, this is a scarce raptor west of the Andes.

Here comes a picture I've had on my computer some time, it's a female Cinereous Harrier from Juliaca. It hunted along the hills just above our house in April this year.

When it comes to birds the highlight of the trip was a visit to Laguna de Sonso, in the valley of Cauca. The rest of the family spent some time walking around in Buga while I preferred mud, mosquitoes and of course the opportunity to see some new birds. The taxi driver I used from Buga to Laguna de Sonso happened to know the place well, and together we walked two hours in the area. I observed more than 50 species at this site.

Crimson-crested Woodpecker, this species is not on the list from Laguna de Sonso. This might bee a new species here.

Aplomado Falcon, Moho 02.04.09

Between Wayrapata and Ninantaya, Moho (Puno) I observed two Aplomado Falcons. I had to leave the car in order to get closer to the birds, and I was able to get quite close before they took off.

While driving between Wayrapata and Ninantaya, Moho (Puno) I observed this American Kestrel. It was eating another unidentified bird. Luckily I could use the car as a hide.

Puna (Variable) Hawk 22.12.08

During an early morning walk together with Finn Jørgensen here in Juliaca we found these two Puna (Variable) Hawks. They seemed undisturbed by our presence, and we could take some close up photos of them.
